Clothes dryers can become a fire safety hazard. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, “2,900 home clothes dryer fires are reported each year and cause an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million in property loss.”
Fortunately, there are simple tips you can take to greatly reduce the chances of a dryer fire:
- Lint Filter – Make sure the lint filter is cleaned each time before you use your dryer. In addition, you must never use your dryer without the lint filter in place. Both scenarios create a fire damage risk.
- Inspect the exhaust duct – There are some telltale clues the exhaust duct is clogged such as your clothes taking longer to dry, an overheated machine, or exhaust failing to leave the vent. You can inspect the duct by removing it from the machine. If you spot a clog, you can safely clean it yourself.
- Replace older ducting – If the ducting is outdated, replacement may be necessary to keep it from becoming a fie hazard. Signs of outdated ducting include stretchable, coil-wired ductwork made of plastic or foil.
- Load – Never overload your dryer with too many clothes. The potential time saved is never worth the trade-off of possibly starting a fire.
